Our neighbors deserve dignity.
We organize with care for people affected by ICE detention in Appleton.
Who are we?
Prairie Alliance for Human Dignity brings people & organizations together to stand in solidarity with immigrant families. We oppose inhumane treatment of our neighbors through detention at the Prairie Detention Center in Appleton, MN. We peacefully and legally organize, advocate, & provide practical, compassionate support to people affected by detention.
What's happening?
A 1,600-bed ICE detention facility is opening in Appleton.
The former Prairie Correctional Facility is being converted into a federal immigration detention facility. The federal government purchased the facility from CoreCivic for approximately $495.6 million, and CoreCivic expects to continue operating it under its ICE contract. CoreCivic has said it expects people to begin arriving in late 2026.
Why does it matter?
Everyone deserves dignity, safety, and to be treated with humanity.
Our neighbors should not be treated as a source of profit, and no one should be denied their human rights because they are in immigration custody.
We are asking questions about conditions inside the facility, access to medical and legal care, oversight and accountability, and the impact of a detention facility of this size on the surrounding communities.
We don’t have to agree on every part of immigration policy to believe people should be treated with dignity.
